OBITUARIES

Evelyn Hooker

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Santa Monica, Calif.-Evelyn Gentry Hooker, a UCLA psychologist whose ground-breaking study of homosexuality found it was not a mental disorder, has died.

She was 89.

Hooker died November 19 at her Santa Monica home of natural causes, said documentary filmmaker David Haugland, who in 1993 produced the Oscar-nominated Changing Our Minds: The Story of Dr. Evelyn Hooker.

In 1992, she was called "the Rosa Parks of the gay rights movement," by Eric Marcus, who wrote Making History: The Struggle for Gay and Lesbian Equal Rights.

Hooker's study, The Adjustment of the Male Overt Homosexual, was controversial when it was published in 1957.

During a three-year study prompted by her friendship with a gay student, Hooker used grant money from the National Institute of Mental Health to disprove the prevailing thinking that homosexuality was an illness.

Hooker's theory was that there was little . statistical difference between the psychological test results of heterosexuals and homosexuals.

"How could my hypothesis have been anything else," Hooker said. "I'd seen these

men and saw nothing psychopathological in their behavior."

as a

Hooker's research, and her leadership of the NIMH Task Force on Homosexuality, led to the removal of homosexuality psychological disorder from the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual III in December 1974.

In 1992, the American Psychological Association awarded her its prestigious Lifetime Achievement award.

Born in North Platte, Neb., Hooker grew up near Sterling, Colo. She earned bachelor's and master's degress in psychology at the University of Colorado and a Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University.

She began at University of California, Los Angeles in 1939. She met gay student Sam From in an introductory psychology class during World War II. He introduced her to gay authors Christopher Isherwood and W.H. Auden.

Hooker married UCLA English literature professor Edward Hooker in 1951. In 1954, she received the grant that led to her pioneering research. She retired in 1970 for a decade in private practice as a psychotherapist.

She was preceded in death by her husband but is survived by two sisters. A memorial service is set for Dec. 20 at the UCLA Faculty Center.
